Genesis Chapter 1 – Commentary and Explanation (Bible Study)
Genesis Chapter 1 – Commentary and Explanation (Bible Study)
Photo by Brett Jordan on UnsplashGenesis chapter 1 is one of the most read chapters in all of Scripture. In fact, for many people when they first open a Bible, this is the first place they go. And it makes sense, right? Because it’s the beginning. Not just the beginning of the Bible, but the beginning of everything – the heavens, the earth, life itself, time, order, and purpose. When we read Genesis 1, we are not just reading old words, we are reading God’s revelation about where we came from and why anything exist at all.
Now, some people read Genesis 1 like it’s only history, others read it like it’s poetry, some read it as theology. I think it’s all of that together. It’s written in a style that is majestic, simple, but also very deep. Sometimes we think, oh it’s only for kids, like Sunday school “In the beginning God created…” But really, it’s profound enough that scholars have debated it for centuries.
Verse 1: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
The first verse is like a door opening. “In the beginning” – so time has a beginning. God is already there. This shows that God exist outside time. He is eternal. He is not created. He is the Creator. The Bible doesn’t try to prove God’s existence, it just declare it. No arguments, no proofs. Just: “God created.”
The word “heavens and earth” is a Hebrew way of saying “the whole universe.” It’s a total expression. So Genesis 1:1 already states God made everything. Some say this verse is like a summary of the whole chapter, and the rest of Genesis 1 unpacks how God did it.
This verse also put God at the center. It does not say, “Matter existed.” It does not say, “The gods fought.” It doesn’t even say, “Humans are first.” No – it begins with God. Everything flows from Him.
Verses 2–5: The First Day – Light
Verse 2 says the earth was “formless and void” and darkness was over the face of the deep. The picture is of something unshaped, empty, like raw material. God’s Spirit was hovering over the waters. Hovering is like a bird, waiting, ready to act.
Then God spoke. “Let there be light.” And there was light. That’s the power of His word. He does not need tools. He speaks, and it happens. This is very different from pagan myths where gods fight and bleed and then something becomes the world. Here, creation is by the Word. That’s why John’s Gospel starts with “In the beginning was the Word…” pointing back to this.
Light came before the sun. This is interesting. Some people get stuck on it. How can there be light without the sun? But the Bible shows God is the source of light. Revelation says in the new creation there will be no sun because God Himself will be the light. So, Day 1, light is not dependent on the sun, but on God.
God saw the light was good. That’s the first time the word “good” appears in the Bible. It shows God’s creation has moral value. It’s not just neutral stuff. It’s good because God made it. He separated the light from the darkness. Order begins. Evening and morning, day one.
Verses 6–8: The Second Day – Sky
God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters.” The Hebrew word is “raqia,” sometimes translated firmament. The picture is of separating waters above and waters below. In ancient view, it was like a dome separating the sky from the seas. The main point is God creates order, space, environment for life. He calls the expanse “heaven” or “sky.”
Again, evening and morning. The rhythm of days continues.
Verses 9–13: The Third Day – Land and Vegetation
On the third day, the waters are gathered and dry land appears. God calls the land “earth” and the gathered waters “seas.” Notice naming – God is sovereign, He gives identity.
Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth vegetation: plants, trees, fruit with seed in it.” Life begins. The land produces life, but by God’s command. This shows creation is fruitful, multiplying.
Again God saw it was good. Each stage God delights in His work. Creation is not chaotic, it’s good, it’s ordered.
Verses 14–19: The Fourth Day – Sun, Moon, Stars
God makes lights in the heavens to separate day from night and to mark seasons, days, and years. This is the creation of timekeepers. Notice the text does not even use the words “sun” and “moon.” It just says greater light and lesser light. Why? Probably to avoid any idea of worshipping them as deities, like in other cultures. They are not gods, just lights, servants of God’s purpose.
Also, the stars. Just mentioned briefly. Billions and billions of galaxies, but to the Bible writer it’s just “He made the stars also.” That shows how small they are compared to God.
Verses 20–23: The Fifth Day – Sea Creatures and Birds
Now God fills the waters and the sky with living beings. Fish, great sea creatures, birds flying. Again, in ancient world, sea monsters were feared, but here they are just creatures made by God. They obey Him.
God blesses them: “Be fruitful and multiply.” The first blessing in Scripture is for life to reproduce. Life is a gift, and God wants it to spread.
Verses 24–31: The Sixth Day – Land Animals and Humanity
Day six is the climax. First God makes animals – livestock, creeping things, beasts. Then, humanity. Verse 26: “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” This is very special. Humanity is not just another animal. We are made in the image of God.
What does image mean? It can mean representation, reflection, authority. Humans are God’s representatives on earth. We are meant to rule creation under Him, like stewards. It means we are relational, creative, moral, spiritual.
God created them male and female. Equality. Both reflect His image. And He blesses them: “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, subdue it.” This is the cultural mandate. Humans are to develop, cultivate, organize, care for creation.
God also gave them food: plants, fruit, every green plant. It shows provision. God cares.
And God saw everything He made, and it was very good. That’s the climax – not just good, but very good. Creation is complete, ordered, full of life, purposeful.
Genesis 1 Themes and Reflections
-
God as Creator – The chapter begins and ends with God. He is the source. No rival gods.
-
Order from Chaos – From formless void to structured creation. God brings order, boundaries, purpose.
-
The Power of God’s Word – He speaks and it happens. No struggle. Just authority.
-
Goodness of Creation – Seven times “God saw that it was good.” Creation is not evil. Matter is not bad. It’s good.
-
Human Dignity – Made in God’s image. Every human has value, male and female, all races, all people.
-
Sabbath Preparation – Though chapter 1 stops at Day 6, it points toward Day 7 (Genesis 2:1–3). Creation is leading to rest and worship.
Application for Us
Genesis 1 is not just ancient history. It speaks today. It tells us:
-
You are not an accident. You are created by God, with purpose.
-
The world is not meaningless. It is God’s handiwork.
-
Work, creativity, caring for the earth – these are holy callings.
-
Rest and worship are part of creation’s design.
-
Human life has sacred value.
When you look at stars, seas, forests, even your own hand, remember: “God saw it was good.”
Conclusion
Genesis 1 is like the foundation stone. The rest of the Bible builds on it. Without it, we can’t understand sin, salvation, or the new creation. The God who created in the beginning is also the Redeemer in Christ and the One who will make all things new.
So when we read these words, don’t rush. Pause. Let them sink. “In the beginning God created…” That sentence alone changes everything.
