2 Chronicles 20

2 Chronicles 20 recounts a powerful and inspiring story of King Jehoshaphat of Judah, who faces a dire threat from a coalition of enemy nations. Despite the overwhelming odds, Jehoshaphat turns to God for deliverance, demonstrating faith, humility, and the power of prayer.

1. The Threat of the Enemy (2 Chronicles 20:1-4)

The chapter opens with the announcement that three nations—Moab, Ammon, and some of the Meunites—have formed an alliance and are marching against Judah. Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, is alarmed by this news and fears for the survival of his people.

2. Jehoshaphat's Prayer and Seeking God's Guidance (2 Chronicles 20:5-13)

In the face of this impending invasion, Jehoshaphat leads the people in seeking God’s help. He gathers all the people of Judah in Jerusalem for a solemn assembly at the temple, where he prays openly before God. His prayer is both humble and bold:

  • Acknowledging God's Power and Sovereignty: Jehoshaphat reminds God of His past acts of deliverance, including His sovereignty over all kingdoms and nations.

  • Trusting in God's Past Faithfulness: He mentions that God had driven out the inhabitants of the land before the Israelites and had given it to His people as an inheritance.

  • Seeking Help: Jehoshaphat acknowledges that the people of Judah are powerless against the large enemy army and pleads for God’s intervention, trusting in God's promise of deliverance.

3. God's Response Through Jahaziel (2 Chronicles 20:14-17)

God responds to Jehoshaphat’s prayer through a prophet named Jahaziel. The message is clear: Judah should not be afraid because the battle does not belong to them but to God. Jahaziel tells the people that God will fight for them, and they need only to stand firm and watch God's deliverance.

  • Key Point: God assures them that they will not need to fight in this battle. They are simply to march to the battlefield and watch God's power at work.

4. Jehoshaphat’s Faith and Worship (2 Chronicles 20:18-19)

Jehoshaphat and the people respond with humility and worship. Jehoshaphat bows down to the ground, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fall before God, worshiping Him. The Levites, descendants of the Kohathites and Korahites, lead the people in praising God with loud voices, thanking Him for His holiness and power.

5. Jehoshaphat’s Leadership (2 Chronicles 20:20-21)

The next morning, Jehoshaphat encourages the people to trust in the Lord. He appoints singers to lead the army, not with weapons but with praise and worship, singing songs to God. Their faith and trust in God’s promise are demonstrated as they march forward, singing about God's mercy.

6. God's Miraculous Intervention (2 Chronicles 20:22-24)

As they begin to sing and praise, God causes the enemy armies to turn on each other. The Moabites and Ammonites, along with the Meunites, become confused and destroy one another. By the time the people of Judah arrive at the battlefield, they find that the enemy forces have been completely annihilated. Not a single enemy soldier remains alive.

7. Jehoshaphat's Victory and the Blessing of God (2 Chronicles 20:25-30)

After the battle, Jehoshaphat and his people gather the spoils of war, which are abundant. It takes them three days to collect all the goods, precious items, and wealth left behind by the defeated armies. This victory leads to a period of peace in Judah, as the surrounding nations are in awe of what God has done. Jehoshaphat's reign is marked by prosperity and peace as the people acknowledge God’s hand in their deliverance.

8. Closing Remarks on Jehoshaphat's Reign (2 Chronicles 20:31-37)

The chapter concludes with a brief reflection on Jehoshaphat’s reign. He continues to seek God and follow His commands, but there are some moments in his later years where he makes alliances that are not in line with God’s will (notably, with the king of Israel, Ahab). This alliance eventually leads to difficulties for Judah, but overall, Jehoshaphat is remembered for his faithfulness and trust in God.

Key Themes and Lessons from 2 Chronicles 20

  • Faith in God’s Sovereignty: Jehoshaphat demonstrates profound faith by recognizing that God is sovereign and that He controls the outcomes of battles, even when the odds seem impossible.

  • The Power of Prayer: Jehoshaphat’s prayer is a model of humility, dependence on God, and acknowledging God’s past faithfulness.

  • Praise as a Weapon: The use of praise in battle is a powerful spiritual principle. The people of Judah trusted God’s promise and used praise to express their faith in His deliverance.

  • God's Faithfulness: God shows that He is always faithful to His promises, and His power is greater than any enemy force. His intervention was not only physical (in the defeat of the enemy) but also spiritual (in strengthening the faith of His people).

  • The Importance of Trusting God in Difficult Circumstances: When faced with overwhelming challenges, we are encouraged to trust God fully, seek His guidance, and rely on His power for deliverance.

In summary, 2 Chronicles 20 is a rich account of a king and his people turning to God in faith during a time of great crisis. It teaches the importance of trusting in God’s sovereignty, the power of prayer and worship, and the certainty of God’s intervention in times of need.
